Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan - June 9, 2026: A broad leafy tree rises from a raised bed of shrubs and grasses in a rain-soaked courtyard in Nishi-Waseda, Shinjuku. Ivy climbs its dark trunk, and broad-leaved plants and small yellow flowers fill the bed around its base. Rainwater covers the red brick paving, and a wooden bench stands beside a low stone wall at the edge of the plantings. On the left, a concrete staircase with a metal handrail leads up past tall ornamental grasses to a level where a few people stand under umbrellas. Cream-colored multi-story buildings and a small white house with a red tiled roof frame the garden behind the trees.
