Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan - June 10, 2026: A lit stairway leads down to the lower level of the Shinjuku Center Building in Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo. Metal lettering on the orange tiled wall above the opening reads Ichibangai in kanji, with the building name in Japanese beneath it. Wall lamps and ceiling spotlights light the tiled walls, the stainless steel handrails and the empty steps descending to a landing. Brick paving and a strip of tactile paving for visually impaired pedestrians cover the plaza in the foreground. Trees and hedges planted around the entrance stand against an office tower with scattered lit windows in the dark sky behind. No people are on the stairs.
