Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan - June 8, 2026: A bar entrance covered in handwritten notices, stickers and signs faces one of the narrow alleys of Golden Gai in Shinjuku, Tokyo, an area of tiny bars on two intersecting lanes. The door carries Japanese notices refusing entry to customers under 18, asking guests to wear masks and turning away large groups and anyone feeling unwell, alongside a No English sticker and several No Smoking signs. A board of small handwritten name tags hangs in the middle of the door, and a single bulb lights the panel of stickers above it. On the wall to the right, a weathered sign reads PSYCOBOLIC SHA, cut off at the frame edge, above an illuminated glass display case holding a drinking glass painted with a face and a paper fan covered in name tags. Below it, a red post box labelled POST carries a notice stating that the premises are completely non-smoking. A yellow sign from the Shinjuku Sanko shopping street association warns that security cameras are in operation.
