Exposed tree roots twist out of a dark soil bank on a forest slope. Pale, thin and knotted, they spread sideways and downward across the bare earth, catching the light against the deep shadow below the overhanging topsoil. Above the bank, a multi-stemmed trunk and several slender trees stand directly over the roots, on ground covered with leaves and fallen twigs. More leaves gather in a band along the foot of the bank. Behind the slope, rows of dark trunks rise against a patch of white sky.
