Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan - June 8, 2026: A man walks out of an anime and souvenir shop onto the street in the Soto-Kanda area of Akihabara, Tokyo. He carries a small package in one hand as two shoppers move deeper into the narrow store behind him, past walls of character goods and a red and cream checkered floor. Anime posters, plush toys and boxed figures cover the facade, under a yellow sign reading Otamatone in Japanese and English. To the right, a bank of capsule toy vending machines carries Bandai labels and decorated panels with Hello Kitty and other cartoon characters. Caged bulb lamps hang from the red frame above the entrance, beside a hand-lettered sign ending in the word Akiba. A notice for the PayPay mobile payment service hangs on the left side of the doorway.
